Balancing Faith & Art with Dance.
Dance is a beautiful art form that allows us to express ourselves through movement. For many dancers, myself included, faith in Jesus is an immensely important part of their lives. However, it can be challenging to bring faith into dance while remaining loving and inclusive to others. In this blog post, we'll explore some ways that I incorporate my faith in Jesus into dance while still maintaining a welcoming and inclusive environment. 1. Use Music with Positive and Inspirational Messages
The music you choose can have a significant impact on the tone of your dance performance. By choosing music with positive and inspirational messages, you can incorporate your faith in Jesus without isolating those who don't share the same beliefs. I tend to look for songs that promote love, hope, and kindness, and that encourage people to come together despite their differences. (However it is always ok to include music that shares the message of your faith!)
2. Focus on Universal Themes
While your faith in Jesus is undoubtedly important to you, it's important to remember that not everyone holds the same viewpoint as you. Using efforts to focus on universal themes that everyone can relate to can be really helpful in bringing differing viewpoints together. Instead of making our performances and messages specifically about Christian beliefs, we often focus on themes that resonate with everyone, such as forgiveness, redemption, and perseverance. This way, our performances and messages will speak to everyone, regardless of their beliefs. (Sharing the truth of the gospel is always acceptable as well.)
3. Use Dance to Tell a Story
Dance is a powerful way to tell a story, and it can be used to communicate powerful messages about faith, love, and inclusion. Im almost always known for using dance to tell a story about the transformative power of faith, or to promote messages of truth, love and acceptance.
4. Be Inclusive and Welcoming
One of the most important things you can do is to be inclusive and welcoming to everyone, regardless of their beliefs. We make sure that our dancers are open to everyone, and that we create a safe and welcoming environment where people can come together to express themselves through dance. Showing love and kindness to everyone, regardless of their background or beliefs is a main pillar at our studio!
In conclusion, incorporating faith in Jesus into dance requires a delicate balance between expressing your beliefs and being inclusive and welcoming to everyone. By using music with positive and inspirational messages, focusing on universal themes, using dance to tell a story, and being inclusive and welcoming, you can create a powerful and meaningful dance performance that speaks to everyone, regardless of their beliefs. With love and kindness, you can bring people together and promote a message of hope, acceptance, and unity through the art of dance.
PS I love you.
