Redefining the 9-5: A Day in the Life of a Dancer, Director, Teacher and Choreographer

In a world where the traditional 9-5 workday reigns supreme, some professions demand a different rhythm. As a dance studio owner, teacher, and choreographer, my daily schedule is far from conventional, yet it is perfectly tailored to the demands of my creative craft.

While most people are just beginning their workday around 9:00 am, my day starts later, with the anticipation of the evening ahead. I wake up with the sun, allowing myself time to prepare both physically and mentally for the day's tasks. Unlike the typical early risers who begin their day with a morning routine, my day kicks off with what others might consider their relaxing/personal time. This period, typically in the morning from around 8:00 am to 1:00 pm, is when I engage in tasks that prepare me for the day ahead.

The morning is a sacred time for me, a period of quiet reflection and preparation before the whirlwind of activity that is to come.

Even during moments of relaxation, I find myself drawn to my computer or phone, attending to the administrative and creative aspects of running a dance studio and company. During my personal time, I transition into the phase of getting ready for the day, which may overlap with my relaxation time. This period, lasting around 1-2 hours, sets the stage for the upcoming activities and classes that await me.

By 3:00 pm, as the traditional workday is winding down for many, my workday begins in earnest. As the day progresses, I engage in a variety of activities to ensure that the studio is ready for the evening's classes. From administrative tasks to choreographing new routines, my afternoons are a blend of creativity and organization, laying the foundation for a successful evening ahead.

The heart of my day is marked by the start of dance classes at 5:00 pm, that my workday truly kicks into high gear, extending until 9:30 pm when the last class concludes.

As the first dance classes of the evening begin, I step into my role as a teacher and studio director, guiding students of all ages and skill levels through the intricate movements of dance. The energy and enthusiasm of my students are infectious, fueling my own passion for the art form and inspiring me to push the boundaries of creativity. As some evenings progress, I transition into the role of choreographer and artistic director with C.Glass Dance Company, working with the company dancers to refine routines and prepare for upcoming performances. The studio comes alive with movement and music, as we collaborate to bring our artistic vision to fruition. The creative process is both exhilarating and demanding, requiring intense focus and dedication, but the end result is always worth the effort. However, the work doesn't stop there.

Typically long after the traditional workday has ended, my work continues. Prior to the start of classes, I allocate time for meetings, strategic planning, and essential business tasks to ensure the smooth operation of the studio and company. Additionally, after the classes end, I dedicate another 2-3 hours to administrative and creative director responsibilities, harnessing the late-night hours when my creativity and focus peak

With a schedule that defies the traditional 9-5 structure, my workday extends into the late hours of the night, where I find the energy and inspiration to tackle strategic initiatives and creative projects.

Balancing the roles of a dance studio owner, teacher, and company director requires a blend of dedication, creativity, and relentless commitment to the art of dance. As I finally retire for the night, typically between 11:00 pm and 1:00 am, I reflect on the day's accomplishments and prepare to recharge for the next day's dance-filled journey. Whether it's reviewing footage from the day's classes, planning future performances, or connecting with collaborators, there is always more to be done. The night is a time for reflection and planning, a period of quiet productivity that sets the stage for the days to come.

The dance studio owner, teacher, and choreographer may have a non-traditional schedule, but it is one that is filled with passion, purpose, and the pursuit of artistic excellence. Every day in the life of a dance studio owner, teacher, and choreographer is a unique and fulfilling journey. It requires a delicate balance of creativity, discipline, and adaptability.

The traditional 9-5 workday may not apply to this profession, but the rewards of witnessing the growth and transformation of dancers, the joy of creating new choreography, and the satisfaction of running a successful studio make it all worthwhile.

So, while my schedule may not conform to the norms of the traditional workday, I wouldn't have it any other way. Dance is my life, my passion, and my purpose, and I am grateful for the opportunity to live each day immersed in the beauty and artistry of this extraordinary profession.
